Our first assignment in Illustration II this semester was to illustrate a single word, and to do it in a way so that it wasn't blatant nor achingly subtle. The word crocodiles kept cycling through my head- not as the word to illustrate, but as the subject matter- and so I chose "awkward" as my word and came up with the idea of a crocodile businessman bring home a wildebeest friend from work only to find his wife preparing exactly that for dinner. Heh. Awkward.

Here's something kinda different. A digital painting I did for a class. It's a magpie.. um that's it really >.>; I attempted realism but then got bored, tired and gave up lol. Heavy use of references though sadly I don't know where they came from.. it was an old file I found on my comp from ages ago. Done in photoshop.

I spent days plucking the wing of a deceased cockatiel to learn about feather layering. This is my favorite drawing! I later learned that what I was observing from the plucking is called Pterolysis.

Says the site All About Birds: "No records exist of Pygmy Nuthatches roosting alone. They always huddle in a group, sometimes with more than 100 in a single cavity." Not only are they gloriously cute and perky, the parents also have helpers who care for the current offspring (widely thought to be the offspring from previous years). They've got to be some of the neatest birds I've ever seen.

ACEO/ART Card for Sage Brush. This is a very tiny space to work in, 2.5 X 3.5 inches about the size of a credit card, it is is an interesting challenge to work with. Also a challenge for me is using real media, I'm such a digital junkie these days. I must admit though I did the preliminary sketch on my computer to work out the composition and pose before printing it out and transferring it with tracing paper to thick water color paper for inking and coloring. Real media: micron pens and colored pencils.

A gift for a friend of mine and very talented artist Kenket! Pyrography on tagua with acrylic highlights. I have never drawn lemurs before, so this was quite a challenge. This pictures is about double the actual size of the pendant, and the colors are a lot softer in person. It's only about 2 inches tall total. A little pen and ink drawing I did back in '98. Came across it again recently and I still like the mood here. Not sure if I'd put this up on the 'net in awhile, so here it is. Javelina are the little "pigs" (though they're not technically pigs) native to the Southwest, also known as collared peccaries.

A decade had passed since The Incident. "People in town… don’t like to remember it much. Not even the hunter whom saved me, it seems. I think he’s ashamed he didn’t get to me sooner. But the damage had been done. G’ma… well, at least she’s at peace. As for me… well, obviously, I lived. The story we tell outsiders is that of a huge mangy wolf that gobbled people up. But we here all know it was a rogue werewolf who had plagued our woods. "However, while I was rescued from being torn to shreds, it seems that when I was bitten by the beast, it’s traits were passed unto me. And while I don’t spend my time in the woods tearing people to shreds, it is out town’s little secret. The lovely, sought after Lil’ Red of this village becomes a beast at night, and runs off with the willo’ whisps. "A decade has passed, and I have lived with this curse, bestowed with a wolf’s fangs. "And I have grown to like it."
